Obituary for Mavis Fern Hayden (Gray)

SATANTA - Mavis Fern (Gray) Hayden, age 93, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at the Satanta Long Term Care Unit. She was born October 1, 1924 to Leila Mae (Fulbright) and Theodore A. Gray at Colgate, Oklahoma. She married Ray O. Barker in 1943 at Stilwell, Oklahoma; he passed on January 6, 1956. Mavis married Leroy A. Hayden in 1958 at Satanta, Kansas and together they beautifully blended their families into one. Leroy passed on February 22, 2008.

Mavis and Leroy owned Hayden’s Clothiers for many years with several locations in Southwest Kansas, specializing in ready-to-wear fashion as well as fabric and notions.

Mavis was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 60 years, eventually attaining lifetime member status. She was a member of Satanta First Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends and challenging any of her family to a good card game. Mavis loved tending to her garden and working a good crossword puzzle. She was an avid reader and excellent seamstress. She made many clothes and created beautiful prom dresses for her granddaughters. Her house was always full of family and all were welcomed, especially her grandchildren! Mavis loved all of her family and every grandchild held a special place in her heart.

She is survived by her daughters, Marsha Flummerfelt of Ulysses, and Robyn Young and husband Cass of Wichita; sons, Gary Barker and wife Mary of Hugoton, Steven Ray Barker and wife Georgina (Jody) of Satanta, Michael Hayden and partner Jeanne Groat of Downers Grove, IL, Shawn Hayden and wife Blanche of Satanta; a brother, Rex Gray and wife Jan of Wichita; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Ray O. Barker, and Leroy A. Hayden; daughter, Farrell Rae Barker; great-granddaughter, Erin Kay Anton; brothers, Kenneth Gray, and Ted Gray; a sister, Sharon Kisker.

Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 26th, 2018 at the Satanta First Baptist with Pastor Rod Klingsick officiating with inurnment to follow at Dudley Township Cemetery. Cremation was entrusted to Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory.
