Obituary for Ruby Evelyn Davis (Derby)

Ruby E. (Derby) Davis, 91, died Saturday, March 31st, 2018 at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, KS. She was born September 20, 1926 to Jennie (Colyear) and George Derby in Claflin Kansas. She graduated from Sublette High School in 1944. She married Benjamin Davis on April 6th, 1947 in Sublette, Kansas.

Ruby and Ben were avid travelers, visiting every state in the United States at least once and also traveling overseas several times on work and witness trips for the church.  She was an active member of the Sublette Church of the Nazarene, holding many positions in the church through the years including Sunday School Teacher, Children’s Church Director, Missionary Board President and Treasurer, and Hospitality Chair; she also enjoyed singing in the church choir for many years and working with Vacation Bible School. She received local and district Distinguished Service Awards for her many years of service to her church. Ruby also enjoyed reading, embroidery and quilting.  

She is survived by her sons, Kent Davis and wife Christine of Rockford, IL, Thane Davis and wife Adella of Lubbock, TX; and daughter Janelle Carpenter and husband Todd of Spring Hill, KS.  Her extended family includes grandchildren, Jade, Benjamin, Marshall and Taylor; and great grandson Asher.

Ruby is preceded in death by her husband, Ben; a son, Craig Davis; a brother, George “Bud” Derby; sisters, Pearl Wright, Opal Staton, Jeanne Roland, Eileen Oxford, Fern Hollopeter, and Mildred Clark. 

Visitation will be 3:00 until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 5th, 2018 at Sublette Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Dr. William R. Thomas officiating. Interment will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
