Obituary for Simona Cruz Alvarado

Simona Cruz Alvarado, was born in Anahuac, Nuevo Leon, Mexico October 2, 1939. She entered the Gates of Heaven on September 8, 2017.

54 Years ago, Simona and her husband, Gabe, settled in Sublette, made their home, grew their family, and became established members of the community. She was a dedicated mother and home maker. Simona was an excellent cook. Many in the community experienced her cakes, pies, tamales enchiladas, and who could forget her peanut brittle. She loved to can peaches, tomatoes, apricots, anything that could be canned. In the growing season, she would find bushels of fresh vegetables left on her porch for her to can and preserve.

With limited opportunity for education, Simona managed to learn to read and write the English language which enabled her to secure jobs within the community cleaning offices for a number of local businesses in the community. She was also a house-keeper for a prominent local family, assisted them in their business, and became a close member of their family. She was trusted and loved by all that came to know her.

She held an unwavering Faith in God. She truly believed “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Totally unassuming, she exhibited the quiet resolve and peace of her faith. Many sought solace in her company, all were rewarded with her love and compassion.

She had a heart to serve. She believed in the power of prayer and was at instant beck and call to join anyone in need of prayer. Her home was always open to neighbors, friends and family, and the hungry.

She was also instrumental in establishing the first Spanish speaking Church in Sublette.

Simona was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gabriel and son, Gabriel Junior.

She is survived by Tonie Roper (husband Michael), son Jose Luis “Joe”, and daughter Teresa Bolivar. She is also survived by 3 Grandchildren (Veronica Mendez, Alex and Erik Bolivar) who became the focus and joy of her life in her later years.

Simona is also survived by 4 sisters; SanJuana Cruz, MaElena Cruz, and RosaElia Cruz, all from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, and Guadalupe Cruz from Satanta, Kansas; brothers, Jose Antonio Cruz and Jose Cruz from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, and Ricardo Cruz from Laredo, Texas.

Her daughter Teresa lovingly cared for Simona the last 3 years of her life, assisted by her sons Alex and Erik, for which the family will be forever grateful.

Simona’s favorite scripture, one which she often cited and guided her daily life, was “This is the day the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24)

The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, September 10, from 6-8pm at the Weeks Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 1547 Road 190, Sublette, KS 67877. The casket will be closed. A private family burial will take place this week at Haskell County Cemetery.
