Rogelio de la Cruz, 62, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017, at Homestead Health and Rehabilitation in Garden City. He was born June 16, 1954, in San Gil, Zacatecas, Mexico to a loving mother, Ermelinda de la Cruz, she precedes him in death. His siblings, Maclovia, Manuel, and Serafin Favela de la Cruz also precede him in death.
Rogelio grew up on his family’s ranch in San Gil where he enjoyed doing agricultural work. He immigrated to the United States in 1974 and settled in Friona, Texas for a period of time, then Hutchinson, Kansas and lastly lived his remaining years in Garden City. He became a naturalized U.S. Citizen on September 8, 1986. Rogelio delivered papers for the Garden City Telegram for over a decade until he became disabled and could no longer work. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life like gardening, laughing, walking, and watching TV.
On June 8, 1996, he married Linda Pamela Marquez of Earth, Texas in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include his daughters, Nyvia de la Cruz, April Covington, and Pamela Marquez; his two sons CJ Covington and Zachary Marquez; his siblings Gilberto, Nivia, Emma,and Rosalina Favela de la Cruz; and numerous grandchildren.
A memorial service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2017, at the Garden City Hispanic Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1801 W Kansas Ave, Garden City, KS. His cremated remains will be kept by his daughter Nyvia de la Cruz and later dispersed on his ranch in San Gil.
